Pre History

We have a relatively short history our founder and Head brewer has a rich history in beer. Trevor Harris has over 15 years brewing expertise to call upon.

Prior to the foundation of the DBC Trevor successfully bought and renovated from derelict the Brunswick Inn, Derby. The Brunswick boasted over 17 hand pulls winning numerous awards most notably Good Pub Guide national beer pub of the year and a finalist in the Camra national pub of the year.

In 1991 Trevor Brewed his first brew from the newly purpose build Brewery thus creating Derby’s first brewpub of the modern age. Trevor continued to brew at the Brunswick Brewing Company until 2002 when the pub was sold to Everards.

History

The Head Brewer Trevor Harris founded the Derby Brewing Company in 2004. The first Brew took place on 30th September 2004.

In October 2004 we were awarded our first award, Old Intentional was awarded a Bronze award for best bitter at the SIBA regional beer awards.

In July 2005 Business as Usual our best selling beer was bottled and can now be found in leading restaurants, hotels and retailers.

Following this early success we have continued to grow and now sell to a range of pubs, restaurants, hotels and major retailers across the country. Including the likes of Asda, Tesco and Majestic.

2007 was quite a year for the DBC.

In September Business as Usual was named the key tracked Asda product of the month in our region. As a result we gained a regional listing into 15 stores.

In October we were awarded a hat trick of SIBA awards:

  1. SIBA Best support of an off Trade retailer for increasing sales of Business as Usual 1300% through sampling and centre Isle display.
  2. Gold Award for Double Mash 4.6% ABV at the SIBA Midlands Regional Beer Competition
  3. Silver Award for Hop Till you Drop 3.9% at the SIBA Midlands Regional Beer Competition

In November our bronze award winning beer, Old Intentional a 5% Premium bitter was bottled and has since been listed in majestic and in local hotels & restaurants.

In December following many months we purchased our first Public House ‘The Royal Standard’, Derwent Street, Derby. The iconic Victorian pub (1862) situated minutes from the city centre and overlooking the River Derwent re-opened on the 5th June 2008 following a major renovation project. We sought to preserve the Victorian character of the building combining it with a modern twist creating Derby’s first ‘Upmarket Local’, something we are all very proud of.

2008 continued as 2007 had ended with us securing a listing from September 2008 for both Business as Usual its 4.4% Traditional amber and Old Intentional its 5% premium bitter into 32 Tesco stores across the midlands.
